Assertiveness is the habit we develop to achieve our goals by setting appropriate boundaries, asking for help when we need it, and being confident and positive about our abilities. It recognizes the needs of each family member and helps get those needs met in a healthy fashion by being firm, not overbearing. It is one of the key virtues that allows us to build healthy self-respect. Assertiveness means you are aware that you are a worthy person with unique gifts and talents. When you have this healthy self-respect, you are positive and confident enough to  think for yourself and ask for the things you need in a way that honors you and everyone around you.
